The Human Extract is a progressive metalcore band from Los Angeles, California. Guitarist Dean Herrera and guitarist / keyboardist A.J. Minette formed The Human Abstract in 2004, adding drummer Brett Powell, bassist Kenny Arehart, and singer Nick Olaerts. The band recorded a couple of demos and played a number of regional gigs before signing with Hopeless Records in 2005.

Soon after signing to Hopeless Records, THA replaced singer Nick Olaerts with Nathan Ells. Nathan Ells joined the band before heading into the studio to record the band's debut full length release 'Nocturne”, which was published by Hopeless Records August 22, 2006. Their album Midheaven was released on August 19, 2008 and featured a new guitarist in Andrew Tapley, who had replaced A.J. Minette previous to the recording of Midheaven. The band has been critically acclaimed for their technical proficiency and stage presence. This technically-inclined metalcore swansong from The Human Abstract finds the band dabbling in influences from djent and, particularly where the clean vocals are concerned, early Muse (circa Origin of Symmetry). That's an odd mixup of styles and they aren't always able to hide the seams, but for the most part they are just about able to make work, crafting it into a hard-edged progressively-inclined album which will have at least some appeal to those who crave metal with progressive sensibilities but prefer to go low on the cheese.

Wisely knowing when it's just on the verge of outstaying its welcome, the album wraps up at around the 40 minute mark, which I think is about right, and with that the band too decided to call it a day; I guess wearing a Digital Veil to the funeral would be appropriate.
